WISDOM FOR THE JOURNEY

“These are the wise sayings of Solomon, David’s son, Israel’s king— Written down so we’ll know how to live well and right, to understand what life means and where it’s going; A manual for living, for learning what’s right and just and fair; To teach the inexperienced the ropes and give our young people a grasp on reality. There’s something here also for seasoned men and women, still a thing or two for the experienced to learn— Fresh wisdom to probe and penetrate, the rhymes and reasons of wise men and women.” Proverbs 1:1-6

I love reading the book of Proverbs. It helps me in my Christian walk.  After all, its counsel is from Solomon, and God said Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived.

Solomon, as a young man with great responsibilities (probably in his twenties), knew he needed God’s wisdom to rule as king (1 Kings 3).  We as ordinary, everyday people need God’s wisdom and counsel, too. Why? As you read earlier, it’s a manual for living right before God. How do we know how to treat people?  How do we know how to do business?  How do we know what life really means and who we are?  We know these things by reading God’s words of wisdom in the bible,

I am amazed how much I have learned in my Christian walk as I’ve read Proverbs. However, it’s not just reading the words.  God graciously allows us to come face to face with situations where we can live out the teachings of His Word.  It’s one thing to read God’s Word, it’s another to do His Word.  So, God gives us opportunities every day to practice doing (obeying) His Word.

I don’t know about you, but I want to be wise, righteous, and equipped for every challenge God brings my way.  God’s Word is available to give wisdom for each situation we face.

Prayer:   Father, give me a hunger and desire to spend time in Your Word every day.  I need Your wisdom.  Amen
